MS Word will also ignore the suggested size and expand each cell to fit the longest word. Note that in MS Word it is a 'preferred width', while in LO it is 'the width'. Since 'preferred width' is just a minimum suggestion, it could be argued that there is no 'correct' size in this case - although I would expect that the as-character image would always be fully contained within the table (and that at least one character can fit inside the cell). But that feels like a pretty fundamental change to make to the table behaviour.
