Gabor is using Microsoft's terminology. Through in this case means wrap around
the non-transparent parts of the image - or something like that.

For what you are describing, Microsoft calls it 'In front of text' or 'Behind
text'.

In terms of the cropping that Gabor is asking for, see attachment 199690 where
MS Word has some awful-looking jagged edges to let the text show over the
image.
