No one is forcing anything on users. The function is kept as-is. It is up to the user to decide what to do, whether to modify his spreadsheets in any way. Modifying the function in newer Calc versions would be detrimental regarding compatibility. Just imagine a user with an old spreadsheet suddenly obtaining a different result than before, without being aware of it. If the user wants to keep it, with the same results as it has been returning for decades, it's all good. If the user decides to use an alternative function that will not have the several issues that the DATEDIF function has for some cases, it is also up to the user to decide. Modifying DATEDIF() now has relevant negative consequences, not only some positive ones. There are more than enough functions in Calc that should be corrected.
