Bug ID: 173781
Summary: Feature request: Live preview of selected text when
hovering over font options in the font dropdown menu
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: UI
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When text is selected in LibreOffice Writer, hovering the mouse over different
font names in the font dropdown should temporarily preview the selected text
using the highlighted font, without applying the change permanently. This would
allow users to quickly compare fonts and see how the selected text looks before
making a choice.
This type of live font preview is available in applications such as Microsoft
Office, where moving the cursor over font options temporarily changes the
appearance of the selected text in the document. Bringing a similar live
preview feature to LibreOffice Writer would improve the typography workflow and
make font selection more convenient and intuitive.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a document in LibreOffice Writer and write some text.
2. Select the text.
3. Click the "Font Name" dropdown menu in the Formatting toolbar.
4. Move the mouse cursor over different font names in the list without
clicking.
Actual Results:
The selected text in the document does not change its visual appearance until a
font is explicitly clicked and selected.
Expected Results:
The selected text on the document page should temporarily render using the font
currently highlighted under the mouse cursor, allowing users to preview and
compare fonts before selecting one.
Reproducible: Always
