Bug ID: 173815
Summary: LibreOffice freezes when opening editable WebDAV
documents with WebDAV locking enabled; works with
UseWebDAVFileLocking=false
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.1.1 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
LibreOffice freezes when opening an editable document from a SeedDMS WebDAV
server while WebDAV file locking is enabled.
The same document can be opened read-only without problems.
The issue occurs with both the Ubuntu package version of LibreOffice and with a
recent LibreOffice AppImage.
Disabling WebDAV locking via: org.openoffice.Office.Common /
UseWebDAVFileLocking = false
immediately works around the issue. With WebDAV locking disabled, the same
document opens normally and can be edited.
This strongly suggests a problem in LibreOffice's WebDAV locking code path.
Environment:
Operating system:
Ubuntu 26.04
LibreOffice versions tested:
- LibreOffice 26.2.5.2 installed from Ubuntu packages
- LibreOffice 26.8.0.3 AppImage
WebDAV server:
SeedDMS WebDAV
The problem occurs with both LibreOffice versions.
Steps to reproduce:
Configure a WebDAV remote connection in LibreOffice to a SeedDMS WebDAV server.
Keep the default setting:
UseWebDAVFileLocking = true
Open an existing editable .ods document from the WebDAV server.
LibreOffice downloads the document and successfully requests a WebDAV LOCK.
LibreOffice freezes / becomes unresponsive.
Close LibreOffice.
Change:
org.openoffice.Office.Common / UseWebDAVFileLocking
from true to false.
Restart LibreOffice.
Open the same WebDAV document again.
Actual result:
With UseWebDAVFileLocking=true, LibreOffice freezes when opening the document
for editing.
Opening the document read-only works.
With UseWebDAVFileLocking=false, the same document opens successfully and can
be edited.
Expected result:
The document should open normally for editing with WebDAV locking enabled.
WebDAV server log:
The SeedDMS/Apache access log shows that all relevant WebDAV requests succeed.
Typical sequence:
OPTIONS -> HTTP 200
PROPFIND -> HTTP 207
HEAD -> HTTP 200
GET -> HTTP 200
PROPFIND -> HTTP 207
PROPFIND -> HTTP 207
LOCK -> HTTP 200
PROPFIND -> HTTP 207
OPTIONS -> HTTP 200
Example:
"HEAD /seeddms/webdav/index.php/.../Belegungsplan-24port.ods HTTP/1.1" 200
"GET /seeddms/webdav/index.php/.../Belegungsplan-24port.ods HTTP/1.1" 200
"LOCK /seeddms/webdav/index.php/.../Belegungsplan-24port.ods HTTP/1.1" 200
"PROPFIND /seeddms/webdav/index.php/.../Belegungsplan-24port.ods HTTP/1.1" 207
"OPTIONS /seeddms/webdav/index.php/.../Belegungsplan-24port.ods HTTP/1.1" 200
LibreOffice User-Agent:
LibreOffice 26.2.5.2 denylistedbackend/8.18.0 OpenSSL/3.5.5
The initial unauthenticated requests returning HTTP 401 are followed
immediately by authenticated successful requests and do not appear to be
related to the problem.
Important observation:
The WebDAV server successfully accepts the LOCK request and returns HTTP 200.
There is no corresponding HTTP server error at the time LibreOffice freezes.
The issue disappears immediately when UseWebDAVFileLocking is set to false.
Therefore the problem appears to occur after LibreOffice has successfully
acquired the WebDAV lock.
Additional observations:
AppArmor does not appear to be involved.
The same behavior occurs with the Ubuntu-installed LibreOffice package and with
the AppImage.
Read-only access works reliably.
The issue is reproducible with LibreOffice 26.2.5.2 and 26.8.0.3.
Disabling WebDAV locking is a reliable workaround.
No /tmp/dav directory or DavLock.pag file is present on the client.
The issue appears to be specific to the WebDAV locking code path rather than
basic WebDAV access.
Possible relation:
This may be related to existing WebDAV locking issues around LOCK/UNLOCK
handling and UseWebDAVFileLocking, including tdf#82744, but the current
behavior may be a separate regression or interoperability issue.
Workaround:
Set: org.openoffice.Office.Common / UseWebDAVFileLocking = false
This allows the document to be opened and edited normally.
However, this is not an ideal permanent workaround because disabling WebDAV
locking may allow concurrent users to edit the same document without proper
locking.
Reproducibility:
Always / highly reproducible.
Severity:
Normal to Major.
The issue effectively prevents normal editing of WebDAV-hosted documents unless
WebDAV locking is disabled.
