            Bug ID: 173882
Summary: Request: Tiered Level of Detail / Zoom Enhancements /
                    Object Movement Enhancements
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: medium
         Component: Draw
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
Using LibreOffice Draw for precise or mechanical drawings, where you are
working with fine details as well as the overall zoomed out scope, is slow and
tedious. Currently, you either manually type sizes into the position and size
window, or you repeatedly modify the grid size depending on whether you're
currently zoomed in or out (which is very time consuming if you're doing it a
lot). Additionally, the keyboard inputs to move objects currently ignore grid
settings all together.

I propose the addition of an "Adaptive Grid". Instead of the current fixed grid
with subdivisions, the adaptive grid would introduce a clean 3-tiered grid
level based on the Zoom Factor:
- Macro: Zoom Factor < 75% (optimised for layout overview)
- Normal: Zoom Factor 75-125% (standard working view)
- Micro: Zoom Factor > 125% (optimised for fine detail work)

For example:
  Macro: 100.0mm / 4.0" grid - quick object creation / placement - keyboard
inputs move objects 100mm / 4"
  Normal: 10.0mm / 0.5" grid - more precision for placement / sizing -
keyboard inputs move objects 10mm / 0.5"
Micro: 0.1mm / 0.01" grid - allows fine tuning - keyboard inputs move
objects 0.1mm / 0.01"

Important details:
- Each tier should have its own fixed grid size.
- Keyboard inputs (arrow keys) for moving objects should snap to the active
tier's grid size.
- Each tier gives you the visual subdivisions from the tier below (removes the
need to calculate it).
- The Zoom Factors are examples and could be user-configured (which may help
other people with different monitors/setups).
- Users should be able to toggle between the traditional static grid, and the
new adaptive grid.

This should dramatically improve the user experience for people that want to
use Draw for precise / mechanical drawings.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set the grid to 10mm with subdivisions set to 8 so you can quickly build
rough shapes.
2. Zoom in.
3. Set the grid to 1mm so you can tweak fine details or manually enter sizes.
4. Zoom out.
5. Reset the grid to 10mm so you can move objects to different locations and
have them line up with other objects.

Actual Results:
The entire process of drawing precise objects becomes slow and tedious. What's
worse is that the subdivisions aren't always equal (depending on the number of
divisions), which means object sizes and spacing become fragmented.

Expected Results:
Users should simply be able to zoom in and out of their drawings and place
objects without having to constantly fight with the UI.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No
