I do see that it is apparently copying in rapid fire style, if I do that, the mouse cursor turns to the circle icon and the marching ants of the selection rectangle stop. But I wonder why you would do that? I suppose a limiter could be added to prevent such behaviour. It doesn't crash for me, possibly because I don't have the same data as you.
