Bug ID: 174122
Summary: Calc permanently converts Latin-only font property to
Tahoma upon saving .xlsx files with Arabic text
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When applying a font that only supports Latin scripts to Arabic text in
LibreOffice Calc and saving the document in .xlsx format, Calc permanently
changes the underlying font property/name to Tahoma upon saving and reopening.
This issue heavily impacts users—especially when opening collaborative or
standard work files that contain protected cells—making it impossible for users
to fix or revert the font styling because the cells are locked.
Behavior Comparison:
In .ods format, the original font properties are preserved correctly.
In .xlsx format, the font property is overwritten with Tahoma upon save.
Unlike Microsoft Excel, which preserves the original font description in file
properties and uses a fallback font for rendering, Calc alters and locks the
stored font property.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Calc and create a new spreadsheet.
2. Type Arabic text in a cell.
3. Apply a font that supports only Latin scripts (e.g., dejavu serif) to the
Arabic text.
4. Save the document as an Excel file (.xlsx).
5. Close the file, reopen it, and check the font property in the formatting
toolbar.
Actual Results:
The font property of the cell is permanently changed/overwritten to Tahoma
after saving and reopening the .xlsx file.
Expected Results:
The original font properties should remain intact upon saving as .xlsx
(matching the behavior in .ods format), rendering with a fallback font instead
of altering the saved font property.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
