            Bug ID: 174132
Summary: Several Modes in which Writer is very laggy (Tests on
2 different computer models and on Windows & Linux)
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 26.8.1.1 release
          Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: Writer
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
Problem modes described below in "Steps to Reproduce" are identical on a
ThinkPad P52 with Linux and a ThinkPad E560 with Win 10 (see the attached
Version Info file for details on both and on the versions of Writer that are
involved).

The problems occur on .odt and .docx files (and perhaps others) that include
underlining (and possibly other embellishments), images, and possibly direct
formatting — for text selection modes that involve progressive highlighting of
the selection. Test files #1 (highly formatted .docx and with images) and #2
are attached (minimally formatted .odt with underlining) are attached.

Steps to Reproduce:
Problem Mode #A: From the middle of the first page of the test files, start
selecting text by holding Left-Button and moving the mouse. Scrolling is
smooth until a formatting object or the bottom (or top) of the screen reached.
>From that point onward, scrolling is by stops, starts and sometimes large jumps
the eye can’t follow. It is very irregular.

Problem Mode #B: Similarly, selecting text with Shift+UpArrow or
Shift+DownArrow behaves the same way, but sometimes stalls and won’t go any
further.

Problem Mode #C: Perhaps related to the above modes is simply scrolling up and
down with the middle mouse button depressed -- which is navigation, not text
selection. There are many hesitations, but not as pronounced as in Modes A and
B.

Problem Mode #D: Perhaps related to those problem modes is simply scrolling
through the test documents with only the up or down arrow key. This is better
than Problem Mode C, but has notable hesitations in several places in both test
files with the slower ThinkPad E560 and minor hesitations on the P52. This
indicates that background work in Modes A & B is needlessly intensive in
comparison, and more intensive than would should be needed to simply highlight
the selection being made.

Actual Results:
(Described in the above Steps to Reproduce.)

Expected Results:
Making selections via the above modes should be as smooth as described here.
Scrolling from one page to another with the mouse wheel is totally smooth.
After leaving the text cursor behind and mouse-wheel to a different page,
Shift-LeftButton **instantly** selects a block of text going back to the
original cursor position. Also, in MS Word, text selection by any means is
flawless, on both machines.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

Additional Info:
This bug posting is written to hopefully get to the bottom of long-standing
problems that are evident in bug reports going back many years and for which
unofficial reports are ubiquitous on the web, without solution. Fixing these
long-standing problems should be a high priority (as noted in some of the bug
reports).

The attached OtherBugReports file lists related active bug reports for Writer
that may help toward a solution. This is a key interaction of users with the
UI, and this illustrates the depths of the problem in programming structure and
years.
