Bug ID: 174188
Summary: Support Lower Resolution and Greater Scaling
(Enhancement for Visual Accessibility)
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.1.1 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
LibreOffice system requirements currently call for at least 1280x800:
https://www.libreoffice.org/system-requirements/ LibreOffice mostly works at
lower resolutions, but isn't officially supported at them.
The higher resolution is an issue:
1. For people using lower-resolution screens.
2. For people who have to reduce resolution for visual issues.
3. For people who have to increase scaling for visual issues.
Getting higher resolution screens can be expensive, and if we have to reduce
them right back to unsupported resolutions to read the screen, it's an
expensive waste.
Steps to Reproduce:
Check the system requirements: https://www.libreoffice.org/system-requirements/
These require 1280x800 or higher. If you have poor eyesight, try to read text
at that resolution or higher, in LibreOffice, and in your desktop, without
scaling, without screen magnifiers, and without 3rd-party accessibility tools.
Then test LibreOffice at 1280x720 and 800x600.
Actual Results:
In Windows, I get awful eye strain unless I reduce resolution, and either
strengthen Cleartype or reduce gamma. (Or I use Mactype, but that doesn't work
everywhere .) Your mileage may vary.
LibreOffice mostly works at 1280x720, and even 800x600. It lacks space for the
Navigator at 800x600, but that's an issue with screen shape, not resolution.
Expected Results:
I suggest 1. Amending the system requirements to note that LibreOffice should
work with lower resolutions, but menus and layouts are designed for higher
resolutions and wide screens, and 2. not breaking lower resolutions, and 3.
gradually restoring support for lower resolutions.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
LibreOffice used to have its own option for scaling, but this was removed,
because it was hard to support, and it would usually be easier for users to
rely on system-wide scaling:
