I just downloaded 4.1.x as it's said to be compatible to 10.5.8 but it crashes
for me too

If it's not compatible, why do you not state on the Requirments page? If it's
just a compiler flag, why don't you set it? It's a bit annoying, having to
download several versions to find a compatible one :(
