It may be related to build configuration, too, because I can reproduce the bug with TDF builds, i.e. when Symbola font is installed, I see the symbols in 3.5.7.2 and 3.6.7.2, but I don't see them in 4.1.3.2. However, in my own builds I see the symbols, even in Collabora builds I see them, which are also built on CentOS 5.
