As a not-so experienced user of 10 years, I also got bitten by this.

Step 1. Copy image in Firefox. 
Step 2. Paste into Writer.
Step 3. After observing sluggish save/load and breakages, discover that I need
to go to Edit-> Links and choose "Break link".

Here's what I think should happen:

(a) On pasting an image, at the very least, the status-bar should warn that
this is pasted as a link, rather than an embed.

(b) Right-clicking the image, then choosing Picture -> Picture gives a "Link"
entry. This is where the "Edit->Links->Break link" function needs to be. It
should also be clearer: use the option to "embed the image" rather than "break
a link".

(c) When I break the link, to embed the image in the document. it doesn't mean
I necessarily want to forget where the picture originally came from. LO should
preserve the URL as a reference in the metadata.
