This does indeed cause a lot of frustration for end users and there is no way to explain this to them. Linked documents cause lots of problems when documents are reopened, often they are slow in opening and make LO look like it's deadlocked. If said document is opened where this is no Internet connection, document appears broken and users perceive that LO not working.
