          Priority: medium
            Bug ID: 72059
          Assignee: [email protected]
Summary: XLS save: 5 sec; ODS save: 5 min; Occasional lag in
                    execution
          Severity: normal
    Classification: Unclassified
                OS: Windows (All)
          Reporter: [email protected]
          Hardware: x86 (IA32)
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: 4.1.3.2 release
         Component: Spreadsheet
           Product: LibreOffice

Continuing to experience Save issues in Calc, whether using manual save or
timed backup. Issue seems to be specific to saving data in the ODS format.

Currently using a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium, but have observed
the same behavior on other machines as well. System contains 2 GB of RAM and
has a clock speed of 1.60 GHz. According to the System Information for Windows
application this system is using a 'Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2060 @ 1.60GHz'
processor, with 2 cores per processor

Application is LibreOffice Portable Version: 4.1.3.2, Build ID:
70feb7d99726f064edab4605a8ab840c50ec57a

For a simple spreadsheet (209 rows, 9 col; one date col and the rest just text)
saving as an XLS or XLSX file takes about 5 seconds, while saving to an ODS
format takes around 5 minutes. Resulting files sizes are: XLS - 1.1 MB, XLSX -
261 KB, ODS - 266 K.

For ODS save, the following is the observed behavior:

1) Progress bar moves steadily across screen until it shows around 90% and
hangs there for several minutes.

2) Progress bar resets and moves steadily across screen until it shows around
95% and hangs there for several minutes. Initial progress seems faster than
original trace, but still much slower than the XLS or XLSX saves.

3) After a total of about 5 minutes the progress bar completes and the
application again becomes responsive to user input.

Note: The times that I've observed it, when the status bar stops its progress,
it does not move at all, it is not just that the movement slowed down. In some
respects this behavior is reminiscent of a process that hangs and times out.
It doesn't sound as if anything is being written to disk during these hangs,
but I can't definitely state that at the moment.

>From what I've seen online this seems to be a continuing issue. Can someone at
least provide some clarification regarding what processes the application is
going through at different points on the Progress Bar? For instance, at what
positions on the bar would actual disk access be taking place? Is this an
issue with the XML libraries being used? Does the application write out the
data to disk when a specific record is created or does it create all of the
objects first and then write them out all at once? I would just like to get a
better feel regarding the steps the application is going through and what it is
trying to do when it hits these pause points.

I have not tried making a comparison of the load times for the various file
types. While it seems to me that the ODS load is taking longer than I'd
expect, it is no where near as long as the saves.

If there is any other specific tests you'd like to have me run or other
information you'd like me to pass on, just let me know.

Thanks,

John
