Could NOT reproduce on 4.1.4.2 AND 4.2.0.4. Auto-correct works "correctly"...

Maybe you put the full stop --inside-- the parenthesis, instead of --outside--

AFAICT, the punctuation (fullstop, exclamation mark etc.) belong out of the
parentheses pair, because they refer to the whole period. So I think the
behaviour of the auto-correct function is as intended.

Setting this to WORKSFORME. If you feel otherwise, please change it back and
provide more info on the subject.
