Steps to reproduce:

Current behavior:pre existing italics are distorted & can't be corrected. 1st
ctrl i fixes; 2nd reintroduces problem
Expected behavior: toggle between italics & normal.
PS this might be the result of using ctrl when I meant to hit shift which
produces wierd results which are easily corrected IF NOTICED via ctrl z. Is
there a way to disable the left ctrl key?
