This bug was fixed in OpenOffice.
When a variable is inserted into a document, it is not being saved.
Use Case:
Open new document.
Use menu:
.Insert
..Other
...Variables
....User Field
>> Name = Test
>> Value = Test
>> click return arrow
Save the document.
Close the document.
Open the document.
The variables are no longer present.
