This happens with OpenOffice and LibreOffice on Windows XP also. Can't remember
where I saw this easy fix, but here you go...

Click FORMAT, PRINT RANGES, EDIT and make sure the existing range is "entire
sheet" instead of "none". What makes it flip to "none" and why does this affect
writing to mass storage? Damned if I know.

On my system, I could force the maddening error by setting the print range to
"none".
