I guess I was mislead by jbf's profile - prolly done with a different version and optimised the wrong case. Either way - examining the full profile; it seems we swap each row only once which is good: I suspect that the problem here comes from the 'holes' in the data - ie. missing entries down the column in various places that fragments the MDDS / column storage and causes copying / re-allocation on swapping.
