With LibreOffice 4.1.5 and 4.2.2 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, text in bold using
Gentium or Geneva font looks ugly (see attached screenshot). This bug isn't
present in LibreOffice 4.0.6.

It appears that both Gentium and Geneva do not provide separate files for bold
versions: there's only regular and italic. But a bold variants does exist for
Gentium, though -- I guess it's somehow packaged in the same file.

(FWIW, it appears that the same problem has existed on at least some old
versions of LibreOffice on Windows, not sure what the situation is today.)

I've found an old discussion about a similar problem with Geneva bold, and it
was related to the fact that Carbon automatically created a pesudo-bold font,
while Cocoa no longer does this. But it shouldn't be required for Gentium at
least since the bold variant exists:
