The problem seems to have occurred following an automatic online OpenSUSE Update which changed the status of two of the 'General' Options unaccountably! The 'Document status - "Allow to save document even when the document is not modified" - box had been unticked and OPEN/SAVE dialogue box had also been unticked. I have re-ticked these boxes and normal save/save as have resumed.
