Linked (as opposed to embedded) images are not displayed when a document is
opened read-only; instead placeholders with the URI are displayed. However when
the same document is opened as "working copy", images are displayed correctly.
The document and images reside on a filesystem where the user has no change
permissions (in case that matters).
