I rebooted the kernel and these issues seem to have gone away.  So, apparently
this situation was induced by the previous libreoffice yum updates without an
intervening kernel reboot.

Historically it is not the first time I have seen an issue where libreoffice
calc did not function correctly until a reboot.

Perhaps I should have rebooted before entering this issue (although why should
a reboot have been required).   From my experience (for most of 2014)
libreoffice calc has had issues with paste-special that I really do not give it
the benefit of doubt anymore.
