So, apparently this situation was induced by the previous libreoffice yum updates without an intervening kernel reboot. Historically it is not the first time I have seen an issue where libreoffice calc did not function correctly until a reboot. Perhaps I should have rebooted before entering this issue (although why should a reboot have been required).
