In printer settings > Device I set 'printer language' to PostScript (from driver) instead of 'PDF'. Result: the kerning is perfect - fonts are printed very crisp, except that things in bold are not printed in bold, but regular and I can see 1 line where there is a 'glitch': it looks like someone has taken a white textmarker and has made some characters disappear.
