For instance, the Ubuntu ppa version of LibreOffice is in fact different from the debian package that you get from libreoffice.org - and we generally recommend using the ppa because of this. I really think it's just the consequence of "choice" - when we have hundreds of distros running their own setup, really hard to make a standardized GUI.
