Yes it was a mistake to think that an ms word ribbon-styled paragraph style list would be suitable for the sidebar. The more suitable one would be similar to iwork pages, so that when the drop down is closed, the current style is styled in the displayed text. I have been working on a new mockup for the sidebar, which can be seen in the attachment. It has re-organized sections, advanced features that are hidden by default, and uses larger icons.
