Pasting-in the given URL seems fine, but it remains as plain text, even if I
enter a hard return or hit the spacebar or tab key.

Compare that with the text of a URL such as http://www.libreoffice.org/, which
will be automatically turned into a hyperlink when I arrow-out of the cell, or
hit the spacebar, or enter key, or etc..

I didn't see any portion of the URL being highlighted. The entire string
appeared to be plain text throughout.

Yep -- basically the same behavior exists in Writer.

That being said, I can't think of the last time I used a URL with a pipe (|)
character in it. If it is valid encoding for a URL, perhaps we can expand the
filter that identifies and converts url texts to hyperlinks.
