I always use Auto Correct while typing to replace single and double quotes with
their 'curly' alternatives.
I was always disappointed that 'Applying' Auto Correct to an existing document
did not also change the single and double quotes until quite recently. Maybe it
arrived with version 4.0 on the non-portable version, I cannot remember
exactly. Now I can fix the thousands of pages typed without the Auto Correct
feature.
However, I use the portable version a lot and import documents form others who
don't want the curly quotes. Sadly, portable version 4.3.2.2 *still* does not
convert these quotes to their curly versions.
Steps to repeat:
1. Check the Format | Auto Correct Options and make sure that they are set on.
2. Check the Format | Auto Correct | While Typing option.
3. Type a word in single or double quotes and make sure that the curly quote
characters appear on screen
4. Import some text you have created earlier without the option being turned
on.
5. Highlight it and select Format | Auto Correct | Apply.
Portable version 4.3.2.2 will leave the straight quote marks: the non-portable
version 4.3.0.4 will change the quote marks to curly ones.
Because the ability to do this was a new feature in version 4.x, I am surprised
that the portable version does not share this improvement and I am categorising
it as a bug on the portable version because (to my knowledge) the portable
version has never been considered a 'lite' version
