All is well. Thanks to all of you for your help. Once the old profile ( /.config/LibreOffice ) was deleted, I reinstalled from the 3.5 DEBS and it worked well. The fact that the new profile crashes with an old profile still ought to be a bug. But I will leave that to the experts.
