Now I understand, [Reproducible] with reporter's sample and "LibreOffice
3.5.1.1 German UI/Locale [Build-ID: 45a2874-aa8c38d-dff3b9c-def3dbd-62463c8] on
German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)

Steps how to reproduce:
1. Start LibO (From WIN Start Center)
2. Open Sample document from file dialog
3. Double click chart
   > chart edit mode starts
4. Couble click most bottom data series (most left symbol)
   > All symbols of line selected,
Line dialog (line TAB) appears, correct triangle symbol shown in preview
5. Click 'Symbol selector -> Gallery -> Yellowstar' star symbol within the
   yellow symbol pictures
   > Selector will be closed
   Expected: New yellowstar in preview
   Actual: red star in preview
6. <OK>
Expected: New yellowstar or redstar from preview becomes data line symbol
Actual: blue circle area becomes symbol

Worked as expected with 3.3.0 Portable, 3.4.1RC, 3.4.5
Broken with 3.5.0 RC2 (others not tested)
