Possibly there is some mechanism, but if it is not discoverable, and if it is not documented, then it may as well not exist. Furthermore, regardless of those factors, it should also be easy to do. What is needed is a straightforward way for the user to specify the default font he wants in his document. The 10 year old version of Excel I am using does this in its "general" preference options.
