I also increased the cache settings given the advice of Mario and vaguely remembering that the IT guy at work did something similar for me many years ago on another computer in another version of Libre. So the settings I've got now are: 256MB, 4.0MB,6.10hrs, 1024 objects (maximum allowed) and things seem to have settled down on several of my files. Before I had at least been able to keep them there and quickly make a pdf to print from, but this time I couldn't keep them there long enough to do the pdf. I tried the suggestion of saving every page and that didn't make a difference. I think it is connected to the number of objects I have in the file, probably way more than the programmers envisaged. so it might be the no of objects allowed figure needs to be higher than what the program comes with. It could also be linked to the length of time before something is 'removed from memory' I tend to use graphics that are quite small in the longer books - average of 150KB. On impress if I use photos I usually if not always compress them to document setting, rather than photo. so I don't think it is the individual graphic size. I appreciate your patience and help.
