It seems that the problem is somehow state-dependent. E.g., I have met it only 4.2.7->4.3.4, while every previous upgrade went smoothly (and upgrading to the same version on several other PCs went OK, too). And if most people here have installed fonts manually, this could just hide the bug as well.
