Agreed. I can also delete a file while I'm writing to it
(Terminal 1: $ cat > foobar
blah
blah  # pause here while entering data

Terminal 2: $ rm foobar

then in Terminal 1: add an additional line of text, and CTRL-D to close the
file.

RESULT: No error, no file saved to disk

I'm going to resolve this as NOTABUG.
