I'm not entirely convinced that LibreOffice should behave this way...

What would you consider a "special character" ?

In the English language, it's perfectly natural to immediately follow a word
with a comma, as I just did twice in this sentence.

Please attach a test document demonstrating words ending in special characters
that aren't being spell-checked properly (the "followed!to" bit definitely
looks like a bug, but I'd like to see the source document myself).
