However, with JDBC connector mysql-connector-java-5.1.21, I get a completely
different problme, namely that my tinyint(1) field shows up as a Boolean in
table grid view, with all boxes ticked.

FWIW, here are the table values I could enter with the native mysql connector
extension as displayed from mysql cli :
