While you are correct that the feature doesn't exist in Microsoft Office, it does exist in WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft Office) and was one of the features that I was pleasantly surprised by as it definitely had a positive impact on productivity for my context. You might take a look at how it's done in WPS Office as an example.
