That being said, I understand the position of LO developers. It feels to me that they are better working in improving features for the current ODT format than trying to achieve perfect compatibility with a proprietary format that is continually in development and for which thay have no control at all. Handling the "hybrid environment" problem on the MS Word side seems a more efficient approach, since .odt is an open format, but .doc is not.
