Impress will export something like this for a slide:
<office:presentation>
<draw:page draw:name="page1" draw:style-name="dp1"
draw:master-page-name="Default"
presentation:presentation-page-layout-name="AL1T0">
...
<text:p
text:style-name="P1"><text:page-number><number></text:page-number></text:p>
the text:page-number field does not contain the actual
slide number, but a placeholder value "<number>".
this is correct if the field is inside a master-page, where
the page number cannot be known, but if the field is inside
a regular slide then it should not contain a place holder
but the actual page number, like Writer does.
this is so that "dumb" consumers that can not evaluate the fields
can read the right text value.
