Usually projector has resolution 1024x768 and there is no point to have larger pictures for screen view. Also using ~85% of JPG quality would be enough for screen view. Would suggest to use JPG as photo file format and nothing else. Using "Tools->Minimize presentation" would also help reduce the presentation size. If still there are problems (e.g. too much pictures to load them all simultaneously as the presentation software does) then I would propose not to use presentation software but just show pictures as separate files with some picture viewing software. Did use that solution several times.
