Does LibreOffice carefully check for each new and every other memory allocation, to exit gracefully? If so, certainly another possibility is that the Linux kernel selected LO as the process to kill, when VM was exhausted - although that wouldn't explain why there were no backup files for the restore process when I restarted LO.
