I ran the included insert macro in both sheets, but the formula stayed fine.

I think your version might be 4.2.x, which is EOL. You can see it in Help -
About.

You can install 4.4 by using a PPA provided by the Ubuntu team:
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:libreoffice/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade 

I'll set to NEEDINFO, while we wait for your further testing results.
