            Bug ID: 93072
           Summary: Font Embedding into Writer documents does not work
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 4.4.0.3 release
          Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
                OS: Mac OS X (All)
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: Writer
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Created attachment 117593

hello-world.odt using "Open Sans" font, with font embedding enabled.

If you create a Writer document, go to menu "File -> Properties -> Font" you
find a checkbox saying "Embed fonts in document". I checked the respective
checkbox.

To a layman like me this sounds like I could use non-standard fonts in my
document, and upon saving these fonts have them embedded in my ODT file.

Then I can pass my document to a friend, and he could open and work with it
even if he does not have my font installed.

I don't know how this feature should exactly work:

  (1) Should he manually install the font on his system after extracting
      it from the document?

  (2) Will LibreOffice automagically handle the font installation on my
      friend's system?

  (3) Should it even work without any installation, just based on the
      embedded font?

Either way: IT DOES NOT WORK, BECAUSE THERE IS NO FONT EMBEDDED in the first
place!

I tested with these operating systems and LibreOffice releases:

 - Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks)
   * LibreOffice Writer 4.4.5.2
   * LibreOffice Writer 4.4.4.3
   * LibreOffice Writer 4.2.6.3

 - Mac OS X 10.10.4 (Yosemite)
   * LibreOffice Writer 4.4.5.2
   * LibreOffice Writer 4.2.6.3

Is this feature even supposed to work? Or is this checkbox just an artefact
from a non-implemented or de-activated feature?

(To be sure, I also tested with the checkbox disabled, just in case a bug
reversed the meaning of the checkbox. No dice!)

How did I check for font embedding?

 1. 1st method. I compared the document size for both cases
    (checkbox enabled/disabled): no difference.

 2. 2nd method. I unziped the ODT file and looked for an embedded
    font file. There is none.

I don't know if other LibreOffice applications (Calc, Impress, ...) are
supposed to also support font embedding, and wether they are affected by the
same bug.
