This problem has been resolved in LO 5.0.

Obviously, one must set up the patterns in
Options/Language Settings/Languages/Date Acceptance Patterns

I have set:
Y-M-D;D/M/Y;D/M;D-M
they all work fine.

MS Excel allows a pattern DDMMM or DMMM (where MMM is a 3-letter month name,
e.g. jan, feb). This is not allowed - the colour of the setting turns red.
I can live with that.
