I created a new Calc sheet and could immediately paste to A1.

Maybe you should try
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User_Profile#Resolving_corruption_in_the_user_profile

Set to NEEDINFO.
Change back to UNCONFIRMED, if the problem persists. Change to RESOLVED
WORKSFORME, if the problem went away with the profile reset.
