So the current LibreOffice version in Unbuntu 14.04 LTS is obsolete.
I've updated my LO to 5.0.1.2 and the fax integration has changed. spadmin no
longer exists, and an external script, fax4CUPS is required.

Therefore, this bug is obsolete, spadmin can't crash when it no longer exists,
and any other problems with sending faxes will have a different cause.

Note to other admins following this route: when installing 5.0.1.2, it asked
whether to replace /etc/libreoffice/psprint.conf, which was customised with my
fax printer definition. I chose to replace that with the default so I had a
clean configuration. However, there are also custom configuration files for
each user:
~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/psprint/psprint.conf
that can contain obsolete printer definitions.
