Sorry, I have never used Linux (and right now I don't have the time to explore
it - although it is now on my TODO list).

However, I believe I have found the cause:
The HP Stream notebook is delivered with a 32Gb SSD drive. Mine came with
Windows 8. Because I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10 and there was
insufficient hard drive space to do this, I installed a new 64Gb class 10
Sandisk micro SDXC card in the notebook's micro SD slot (a reputable make with
fast access times). After upgrading to Windows 10, I left the SDXC card in
place and re-located the "My Documents" folder to it. This is the folder I was
using for my LibreOffice documents.

During my own investigations into the problem I noticed that a specific file
that always caused problems, no longer did so after I moved it to the "C"
drive. It turns out this was not a coincidence.

When I bought the SDXC card it arrived pre-formatted as FAT. After I
reformatted it as NTFS the problems vanished - I was unable to recreate them.

Problem (apparently) solved, even if I don't understand why it occurred with a
FAT-formatted SD card. Thank you to those who replied to this ticket and
others who may have considered the symptoms I reported and been as perplexed as
I was.

Because I don't know whether the low-level code that interacts with an SD
device is LibreOffice logic or somewhere in the notebook's drivers, I don't
know enough to be able to mark this ticket as Resolved/Wontfix or
Resolved/Notabug or Resolved/Notourbug. Please can a moderator close this as
appropriate.
