Before Step 1: 
I am working in docB, it may have been originally created using MS Powerpoint,
or Impress using a different template (I often use the content of a slide in
different presentations which have a different background).

For reference:
In Powerpoint, when one copies a whole slide (page) from one presentation to
another, the copy and paste (with the slide preview on the left hand side
activated) only brings across the content without background and styles -
unless there is no direct equivalent in the past document, then it will add
that style.

This seems to me to be a sensible approach.

There is merit in bringing across the background and styles as well, as seems
to happen in Impress, but I think that should be controlled by an option (why
would you want to bring across a background which may include logos and other
information not pertinent to the past document?)
