The classical yellow smileys like ;-) are something used in Email programmes.
I think that they are not supported in LO in that way, at least not yet.  If
you try for instance to copy a smiley from a Email programme to LO then the
smiley will not be inserted.  The same happens if you open a Email with
classical yellow smileys in LO.

But you can insert emoticons, similar to the yellow Email smileys.  You can
find them in LO if you go to TOOLS -> AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS -> tab REPLACE and
scroll down.

If I try to print them as PDF then they printed as expected (tested with LO
5.0.3.2, Win 8.1).
