I think that they are not supported in LO in that way, at least not yet. If you try for instance to copy a smiley from a Email programme to LO then the smiley will not be inserted. The same happens if you open a Email with classical yellow smileys in LO. But you can insert emoticons, similar to the yellow Email smileys. You can find them in LO if you go to TOOLS -> AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS -> tab REPLACE and scroll down.
